In 1959 American photographer Bruce Davidson shot an intimate study of a Brooklyn Gang (The Jokers) that probably documents more succintly and honestly the world in which these teenagers came of age than just about anything anyone could have “written”. Shadowing the gang Davidson captures perfectly the mix of energy and enthusiasm that co-exists alongside the boredom and anxiety of the adolescent gang as it comes to terms with changing times and uncertain futures. Many of the images can be seen online here, well worth a look.
Davidson also shot some great stuff in East Harlem in the latter part of the sixties. Check them here as well as producing an unpparalled collection of images documenting the journey and growth of the American Civil Rights Movement from 61 thru’ to 65. See them here.
